3,3',5-Triiodo thyroacetic acid-13C6 is a radioactive isotope of iodine that is used as a tracer to study the thyroid gland. When this compound is ingested, it binds to the thyroid and emits alpha particles. The emitted radiation can be detected by a gamma counter or scintillation camera. This compound can be used to investigate the effects of thyroid hormone on water vapor transport in the lungs, as well as its role in metabolic processes such as energy metabolism and transcriptional regulation. 3,3',5-Triiodo thyroacetic acid-13C6 has also been shown to be an experimental model for autoimmune diseases, such as Graves' disease and myasthenia gravis.
