p-Tolyl sulfate is an indoxyl sulfate analog that induces toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and TLR2. This compound has been shown to have a matrix effect on the kidney, leading to disease activity. It also has a basic protein binding effect, which may be due to its ability to induce cytokines and chemokines. P-tolyl sulfate can be used as a natural compound for the treatment of bowel disease. p-Tolyl sulfate has been used as an analytical method for detecting indoxyl sulfates in urine and feces samples. The detection of this compound is based on its oxidation by sodium periodate followed by preparative hplc. The oxidative injury can be prevented by using glutathione or other antioxidants, such as cysteine or vitamin E.
