5-Iodo-1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene is a promastigote inhibitor. It inhibits the formation of amastigotes and phagocytosis by macrophages. This drug binds to the active site of the enzyme leishmanian protease and blocks its activity. 5-Iodo-1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene is used in chemotherapy for the treatment of leukemia and other cancers. The drug is also an antidepressant agent with a mechanism of action similar to that of Prozac (fluoxetine). It has been shown to be effective against colon cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. 5-Iodo-1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene has been shown to have antitumor activity against both avian sarcoma and human breast cancer cells. Its mechanism of action is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis by binding DNA polymerase
