1,3,5-Trioxane is a trioxane. It is used in the synthesis of organic acids and as a solid catalyst for reactions involving inorganic acids. 1,3,5-Trioxane is an acid that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cervical cancer. The process optimization of this compound has been studied with respect to biological treatment. The reaction mechanism of 1,3,5-trioxane starts with formaldehyde reacting with an acidic solution to produce formic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Hydroxyl groups are then added to form a hydroxyl group on the trioxane ring. This intermediate product reacts with an organic acid to produce a sesquiterpene lactone and fatty acid.
