Description:

2,2,4,4-Tetramethylpentane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. It has been used as an extractant in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride and other chlorinated organic compounds. 2,2,4,4-Tetramethylpentane can be synthesized by reacting chlorine gas with n-hexane. This reaction produces a mixture of four isomers: 2,2,3,3-tetramethylpentane; 2,2,3-trimethylpentane; 2,2-dimethylpropane; and 1-chlorohexane. The activation energies for these reactions are 25 kcal/mol for the first two isomers and 16 kcal/mol for the last two. The waveform of the reaction products depends on the relative amounts of reactants. The hydrogen bond formation constant is 10^(-5).
