Tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole-1,3(2h,3ah)-dione is a neuroprotective drug that is synthesized from formamide and sodium hypochlorite. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brain as well as preventing mitochondrial dysfunction. Tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole-1,3(2h,3ah)-dione has also been shown to reduce body weight in rats by inhibiting carbohydrate absorption. The synthesis of this compound involves reductive amination using formamide and sodium hypochlorite. Tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole-1,3(2h,3ah)-dione is soluble in water and its melting point is low enough for it to be used as a solvent in other chemical reactions.
