Triphenylphosphine-3,3',3''-trisulfonic acid trisodium (TPS) is a glycol ether that can be synthesized from hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate in the presence of orthoboric acid. This chemical has low bioavailability and a high degree of toxicity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit ATPase, an enzyme involved in the transport of ATP. TPS also reacts with intracellular targets such as fatty acids and phospholipids. In addition, TPS may react with cationic surfactants by forming an ion pair or by attacking the sulfonium cation. TPS is also used as a catalyst in biological reactions and has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of other glycol ethers.
