1,4,5,6-Tetrahydropyrimidine is a biochemical that has been shown to interact with the acetylcholine receptor. It binds to the m1 receptors and inhibits the interaction between ligands and acetylcholine. This drug also has been shown to increase acetylcholine levels in the brain, which may be due to its inhibition of phosphatases that are involved in deactivating acetylcholine. 1,4,5,6-Tetrahydropyrimidine has been shown to have therapeutic value in Alzheimer's disease via its ability to inhibit cholinesterase activity. The drug is an amidine derivative of pyridine and is structurally similar to carbamates such as phenoxybenzamine and propanidid.
