Tetraisopropyl dichloromethylene diphosphonate is a hydrolyzing agent that is used for the production of polyurethane resins. It reacts with the alcohols in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form an alkyl ester, which is then hydrolyzed to form an alcohol and a chloride ion. This process can be done in one step or two steps, depending on the desired product. Tetraisopropyl dichloromethylene diphosphonate is also used as a catalyst for the reaction of ethylene glycol with chloroform to produce ethylene dichloride. The reaction is carried out at refluxing temperatures in order to prevent side reactions.
