2,2,5,5-Tetramethyl-3-amino-pyrrolidine-1-oxyl free radical (TEMPO) is a reactive radical species that can be used as an analytical reagent in liquid chromatography. It is used as a solvent and has been shown to affect the reactions of nitrite and tobacco. TEMPO reacts with fluorescent molecules to produce a fluorescent product, which can be observed using liquid chromatography. TEMPO also interacts with carbon tetrachloride and other halogenated hydrocarbons to form sulfoxide and acetonitrile radicals. The rate of these reactions can be measured by kinetic analysis with high performance liquid chromatography.
