Thiazolylmethyl-4-nitrophenylcarbonate is a chloride carbamate that is toxic to the environment. The compound is used as a catalyst in industrial reactions, such as the conversion of thionyl chloride to chloroform, and the conversion of tert-butyl chloride to benzene. Thiazolylmethyl-4-nitrophenylcarbonate reacts with triphosgene or tert-butylcarbonyl chloride in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at low temperatures to form a tert-butyl carbamate, which can be used in the synthesis of ritonavir.
