Thiomuscimol is a benzodiazepine analog that binds to the alpha-2 subunit of GABA receptors. It has been shown to have anxiolytic properties in vivo and has been used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. It also has inhibitory properties and can be used to treat epilepsy. Thiomuscimol inhibits neuronal death by binding to the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor, which may be why it is effective in treating autoimmune diseases. Thiomuscimol also prevents the release of glutamate, which may lead to its use as a treatment for Parkinson's disease.
