Thiophthalazone is an alkoxycarbonyl compound that has the ability to form a complex with metal ions and hydrochloric acid. It is used as an occlusion agent in the treatment of eye conditions, such as iritis, iritis-scleritis, and uveitis. Thiophthalazone can be activated by water vapor or nitrous acid to form toxic chloride ion and other haloalkyl derivatives, which cause muscle paralysis and death in insects.
