L-(+)-threo-chloramphenicol is an antibiotic drug that inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. It binds to the ribosomal 50S subunit and prevents amino acid transfer. This drug binds to the plastid of plants, which is the site of polypeptide synthesis. L-(+)-threo-chloramphenicol has been shown to be effective against Trichomonas vaginalis and is used for the treatment of this sexually transmitted infection. L-(+)-threo-chloramphenicol also has a role in plant physiology by inhibiting phosphatases and preventing the hydrolysis of disulfide bonds, which are important for maintaining cell structure. L-(+)-threo-chloramphenicol is not active against mitochondria, as it does not bind to these organelles.
