Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a chemical compound that has been shown to have a variety of uses. It is used as an industrial solvent, a reagent in organic synthesis, and as a precursor for other chemicals. Trichloroacetic acid can be prepared by the electrolysis of sodium chloride solution. The reduction process involves the addition of zinc metal or other alkali metal to trichloroacetyl chloride in liquid hydrochloric acid. This reduces the chlorine atoms to hydrogen gas and the acetic acid molecule to two molecules of hydrogen chloride and one molecule of water. TCA is also used in the manufacture of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-picolinic acid (TCPA), which inhibits cell growth by inhibiting RNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and DNA replication. TCPA has been shown to be effective against bacterial isolates resistant to penicillin G, methicillin, erythromycin, kan
