N-Trimethylsilyl-2-pyrrolidone (TMS) is an activating reagent that can be used in the preparation of carbonyl compounds. It has been used to synthesize the carbonyl group in a variety of organic molecules such as amino acids, amines, and alcohols. TMS also reacts with thionyl chloride to form chlorosilanes. TMS is activated by magnesium and reacts with amines to form silylamines. This substance is metabolized by oxidation or hydrolysis to produce trimethylamine, which may cause neurotoxicity.
