L-o-Tyrosine is a reactive amino acid that can be used as a model system to study the response of cells to oxidative injury. It has been shown in experimental models and in analytical methods to protect mitochondria from oxidative injury by maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential. L-o-Tyrosine has also been shown to maintain the antioxidant status of human serum and human immunoglobulin, and to reduce radiation damage in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. L-o-Tyrosine may also have antioxidant properties due to its ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids.
