Description

1,1,2,2-Tetrachloro-1,2-dimethyldisilane (TMDS) is a silicon compound that is used in elastomers as an additive to improve the rubber's strength. TMDS is also used to produce silicone rubber and carbon tetrachloride. This compound has been shown to exhibit vibrational frequencies at various temperatures and can be introduced into elastomers by heating them with TMDS vapor. The molecular structure of TMDS has been studied using x-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It consists of two silicon atoms joined together by a triple bond which results in an asymmetric shape. The molecule has one unpaired electron on the left side and one on the right side.
