4-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl isothiocyanate is an amide that is a reactive, functional group. It has a water vapor absorption band at 3100 cm-1 and a C-F stretching vibration at 910 cm-1. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl isothiocyanate also has two hydroxyl groups, one imine bond, and one amido bond. This compound can be used as a desulfurization agent for the removal of sulfur compounds from petroleum products. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl isothiocyanate reacts with sulfides to form disulfides. This reaction occurs by cleavage of the sulfur-hydrogen bonds in the sulfide molecule, followed by attack of the thiol (SH) on the carbonyl carbon of the isothiocyanate (C=O).
