Tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-one (THP) is a proapoptotic agent that is structurally similar to the serine protease inhibitor, oxone. It has been shown to have anti-tumor activity and to inhibit growth of bacteria and viruses. THP also exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo. The anticancer activity of THP may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. This compound has low bioavailability which is attributed to its poor solubility in aqueous environments and its propensity for protein binding.
