Product Information
Trimethylene sulphide is a molecule composed of two carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms. It has the chemical formula C2H6S. The compound is a colorless, flammable gas that has a sweet odor. Trimethylene sulphide can be used to synthesize sulfides, hydroxyl groups, and fatty acids. This compound can also be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds. The reaction mechanism for trimethylene sulphide involves a single electron transfer from hydrogen fluoride (HF) to nitrogen atom followed by a proton transfer from the hydrogen atom to the nitrogen atom. Hydrogen fluoride then attacks the sulfur atom, forming thietane and leaving HF as the only product. Trimethylene sulphide reacts with skin cells in sunlight to form reactive oxygen species such as singlet oxygen that cause skin cancer when exposed over long periods of time. Trimethylene sulphide is also used in asymmetric synthesis reactions due to its high kinetic
