Tetramethylcystamine dihydrochloride is a water-soluble, sulfate salt of the protonated form of tetramethylcystamine. It is a surfactant that is used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to enhance the solubility of active ingredients. Tetramethylcystamine dihydrochloride reversibly forms micelles with anionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). This property allows it to be used as a surfactant for responsive systems that require two surfactants with different hydrophilicities. Tetramethylcystamine dihydrochloride also has dithiothreitol-mediated disulfide bonds, which allow it to be used in peptides and proteins containing reversibly disulfide bonds.
