Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate is a particle that has an optimum concentration of 0.1 M. It is used in electrochemical studies as a diazonium salt, which reacts with glycol ethers to form metal chelates, and can be used as a solid phase microextraction extractant. Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate is also used in radiation detection as a hydrogen bond acceptor or donor, and has been shown to have redox potentials of +0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl and -0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl.
Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate has been shown to have an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy peak at 1 kHz, which is the frequency range for human hearing.
