Trichloromethylazacycloheptane is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain. It is also used as an antiglaucoma drug and to treat endometriosis. Trichloromethylazacycloheptane has been prepared by reacting malonic acid with hexane in the presence of colitis, which is a type of bowel inflammation. The chloride ion acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electron-deficient carbon atom, forming a chloroformate intermediate. This intermediate reacts with chloride ion to form 2R,5S)-2-trichloromethyl-3-oxa-1-azabicyclo[3,3,0]octane-4-one.
