Triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride (TETA) is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be effective against a wide variety of bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens. TETA is also used in the treatment of metabolic disorders, bowel disease, and primary sclerosing cholangitis. The mechanism of action for TETA is not well understood and may involve either direct interaction with bacterial cell walls or interference with the activity of specific enzymes. TETA has been shown to have long-term efficacy in chronic viral hepatitis infections and in chemical stability studies. TETA has not been associated with any serious adverse effects in toxicity studies involving humans.
