Thien-2-yl-diMethylsilanol is an organosilicon compound that inhibits bacterial growth. It has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus and many other Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Thien-2-yl-diMethylsilanol is synthesized by the reaction of phenothiazine, phenoxazine, dopamine, sodium carbonate, and anhydrous sodium chloride. The desired product can be obtained by refluxing the mixture in methanol or water. The molecular weight of this compound can be determined using nmr spectra and cross coupling techniques. The IR spectrum shows peaks at 1698 cm−1 (C=O) and 1061 cm−1 (C=N).
