Triphenylphosphonium bromide is an ionic liquid that can be used as a source of the reactive oxygen nucleophile. Triphenylphosphonium bromide has been shown to inhibit autoimmune diseases by reacting with mitochondrial membrane potential. This chemical has also been shown to react with sodium carbonate, which generates hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide. The reaction solution was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic data were collected for the triphenylphosphonium bromide ion. The spectrum showed that the molecule contains a hydroxyl group and two methyl groups in its structure. The triphenylphosphonium bromide ion also reacts with glycosidic bond and fatty acids to form dimethyl fumarate, which is a pharmaceutical intermediate used in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory drugs such as dimethyl fumarate.
