(S)-(-)-Trityl glycidyl ether is a phosphonate that inhibits the activity of the enzyme human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase by binding to its acyclic nucleoside. It is also an inhibitor of purine synthesis and has been shown to have inhibitory potency against other viruses, such as herpes simplex virus. This compound binds to magnesium with high affinity, which makes it an efficient method for synthesizing this product in the laboratory. The molecular structure of (S)-(-)-trityl glycidyl ether was determined using X-ray diffraction at room temperature on a metal carbonate crystal.
