Tripropylene glycol is a glycol ester that is used as an ingredient in detergent compositions, metalworking fluids, and hydraulic fluids. It is also used as a light stabilizer for polyester resins and plastics. Tripropylene glycol is not readily biodegradable in the environment and can cause skin irritation at high concentrations. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes, which are made up of lipids. This inhibition causes bacterial cells to swell and die from a lack of water or oxygen.
