5-Trifluoromethyl-1H-benzimidazole is a heterocyclic compound that is synthesized from 2-nitroimidazole and benzyl chloride. 5-Trifluoromethyl-1H-benzimidazole forms a covalent bond with the nucleic acid polymerase, preventing the enzyme from binding to DNA. This prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. The synthesis of 5-trifluoromethyl-1H-benzimidazole has been reported in the literature. It was found to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth at concentrations of 0.5 mM or higher and did not show any inhibitory activity against human cells at concentrations up to 100 μM.
