L-Tryptophan benzyl ester hydrochloride is a carbodiimide with hypotensive and anti-inflammatory activities. It is also used to treat liver diseases, such as hepatitis. L-Tryptophan benzyl ester hydrochloride has a quinone structure that can be oxidized by alkali metals to form dione derivatives. The residue of the reaction is a benzylamine, which can be converted into the corresponding ester by treatment with acid. L-Tryptophan benzyl ester hydrochloride binds to DNA, inhibiting RNA synthesis and protein synthesis in bacteria. This drug also inhibits the growth of cancer cells in mice and human cell cultures.
