1,3-Thiazole is a nitrogen heterocycle with antifungal activity. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of fungi in vitro. In vitro studies have shown that 1,3-thiazole inhibits the growth of bacteria and yeast by binding to their cells and inhibiting protein synthesis. Coumarin derivatives containing 1,3-thiazole are also known as antimicrobial agents. These compounds are stable in anhydrous sodium (Na) or potassium (K) atmosphere and can be used to preserve food products free from microorganisms. 1,3-Thiazole also has been shown to induce autoimmune diseases in mice when injected into the mouse's footpad. It is unclear how these effects occur but it may be due to an immune response that results from binding of the molecule to self-antigens on the surface of cells within the footpad.
