L-Tyrosine benzyl ester is a synthetic substrate that is used to study the catalytic properties of serine proteases. It has been shown to inhibit binding of epidermal growth factor (EGF) to its receptor and has an odorant binding capacity. L-Tyrosine benzyl ester also binds well to monoclonal antibodies and can be used as a tracer for immunoassays. The functionalities of L-Tyrosine benzyl ester include being a cardiac stimulant and an anti-inflammatory compound.
