2,4,6-Triisopropylbenzenesulfonyl azide is an azide that can be used in the Staudinger reduction reaction. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses and is used for the treatment of chronic bronchitis and hepatitis. This compound reacts with nucleophiles such as hydroxide ion or enolate ions to produce a sulfonium ylide. The resulting sulfonium salt can then react with electrophiles such as chloride ions to produce a new carbon-sulfur bond. The stereoselectivity of this reaction is controlled by the relative orientation of the two substituents on the nitrogen atom.
