Tetrahydropyran-2-yl)methylamine hydrochloride (THAM) is a dihydro, glycosidic, acidic compound that is used in pharmacological studies. THAM is a reaction product of chitinase and 2-(1-piperidinyl)ethanol. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of pulmonary fibrosis cells by inhibiting the production of collagen and other proteins necessary for cell proliferation. Tetrahydropyran-2-yl)methylamine hydrochloride also inhibits the activity of chitinases, which are enzymes that break down chitin and produce glycosaminoglycans. Inhibition of these enzymes may prevent chronic inflammation and fibrosis in humans with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
