Thiazole-5-carbaldehyde is an active compound that has been prepared by the reaction of phosphorus oxychloride with oxime. It is a colorless liquid that has been shown to be selective for the chlorination of alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. Thiazole-5-carbaldehyde can also be used to prepare β-unsaturated ketones by the evolution of hydrogen chloride and dehydration. The yields are typically low due to the formation of side products such as chalcones and aldehydes.
