Thiophene-3-carbonitrile is an organosulfur compound that has been used for the synthesis of a number of other organic compounds. It is toxic to animals and may be harmful if swallowed. Thiophene-3-carbonitrile binds with amines, and this binding may be responsible for its toxicity by forming a nitrosamine intermediate. Molecular docking analysis has shown that hydrochloric acid can activate methylene groups in thiophene-3-carbonitrile, which may account for its high inhibitory activity on cellular processes. The kinetic data show that the alkylthio group plays an important role in the activation of this molecule. Thiophene-3-carbonitrile also has potent inhibitory activity against tumor cells and infectious diseases such as HIV and malaria.
