1,3,7,9-Tetramethyluric acid (1,3,7,9-TMUA) is a purine alkaloid that is structurally related to caffeine. It has been shown to have a variety of effects on the brain and its functions. 1,3,7,9-TMUA has been shown to improve locomotor activity and glomerular filtration rate in mice. 1,3,7,9-TMUA also has thermodynamic properties that are similar to those of caffeine. This compound also inhibits hepatic steatosis by regulating mitochondrial functions and lipid metabolism. Theacrine can be used as an alternative to caffeine because it does not cause hepatic steatosis or long-term toxicity.
