Trifluoroacetylacetone is a caproic acid derivative that is used in the preparation of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and other organic compounds. It has been shown to produce polymers with high molecular weights and good physical properties. Trifluoroacetylacetone can be prepared by reacting anhydrous sodium hydrogen fluoride with methyl ethyl trifluoroacetate. The polymerization reaction occurs via a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group of the reactant. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied using analytical methods such as intramolecular hydrogen transfer and solid phase microextraction. Trifluoroacetylacetone is also used for the polymerization of dna duplexes for use as probes for dna sequencing, hybridization assays, or as primers in polymerase chain reactions.
