Tetrabutylammonium difluorotriphenylstannate (TBAT) is a polycarboxylic acid that is used as an antiretroviral agent. TBAT inhibits the reverse transcriptase of HIV, which is an enzyme that converts RNA into DNA. This drug also has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in bacteria and yeast by reacting with their hydroxyl group. The nucleophilic chlorine atom attacks the phosphate group of ATP, leading to a reversal of the reaction and resultant cell death. TBAT has pharmacokinetic properties that result in a high degree of bioavailability in humans.
