Tetrabutylammonium borohydride is a chemical reagent that reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to form hydrogen borohydride. It is used in the synthesis of fatty acids, as well as in the treatment of cancer and brain infarction. Tetrabutylammonium borohydride has been shown to induce mitochondrial membrane depolarization and inhibit fatty acid oxidation by binding to the hydroxyl group on the fatty acid molecule. This reaction may be due to its chemical interactions with other nonpolar solvents such as nitrogen atoms from the p-nitrophenyl phosphate substrate, which leads to an increase in hydrogen bonding between molecules.
