m-Tolyl acetate is a coumarin derivative that is used in the preparation of pediatric medicines. It is an acylation product that reacts with hydrogen and hydrochloric acid to form m-tolyl chloride. The reaction mechanism of m-tolyl acetate is the formation of a hydrogen bond between the carbonyl group and the amine. This reaction has been shown to be effective against many bacteria, but not against fungi such as Candida albicans or Aspergillus fumigatus.
