Tubocurarine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid that acts as a neuromuscular blocker and is used in the treatment of muscle spasms. It binds to nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction, thereby blocking acetylcholine release and causing paralysis. Tubocurarine has been shown to have neurotoxic effects on peripheral nerves in animals, leading to neuronal death. The long-term toxicity of tubocurarine has also been studied in rats, but no evidence of disease activity was found. Tubocurarine chloride pentahydrate is an x-ray crystal structure with a pyrazole ring linked by two methylene bridges. It is not genotoxic or mutagenic, but does have a slight toxic effect on cells in culture. This compound also has low potency for bacterial infections and shows little activity against viruses or fungi.
