Tetrakis(methylthio)tetrathiafulvalene (TMTSF) is a type of organic electronic material. It is an organometallic compound that has been used as a supramolecular synthon in the synthesis of polymers. TMTSF has also been used as an electron acceptor in organic solar cells and as a sulfur-containing ligand in metal-organic frameworks for gas storage. The molecular structure of TMTSF consists of four tetrathiafulvalene rings, which are connected together by methyl groups.
The synthesis of TMTSF involves the reaction of methyltrialkoxysilane with thiourea and tetraethylammonium sulfide. When irradiated with light, TMTSF can undergo bond cleavage, where one or more bonds between two atoms break to form new compounds. This process can be useful for creating new compounds from old ones.
