Trimellitic anhydride chloride is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It is used as a monomer in the production of polyamide resins and polyurethane elastomers. Trimellitic anhydride chloride can be polymerized with other monomers, such as methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate, to produce polymers. This compound reacts with water to produce hydrogen chloride gas, which may lead to corrosion of metal parts in contact with the reaction solution. Trimellitic anhydride chloride also reacts with water vapor, forming hydrochloric acid and water.
