Trifluoromethylbenzohydrol is a densitometric solvent that is used in the production of cellulose triacetate. It is a primary alcohol with three trifluoromethyl groups. Trifluoromethylbenzohydrol reacts with solutes to form a biphasic system, and this reaction can be reversed by adding an acid or base. The solvent has been shown to have eluting properties for biomolecules such as DNA and proteins. Trifluoromethylbenzohydrol also has electron-deficient properties, which are mediated by hypophosphorous acid, making it useful for chiral separations. This solvent can be scaled up easily and optical purity can be achieved using plates or optical cells.
