D-Tubocurarine chloride is a model system for the study of neurotoxicity. It binds to the α1 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which is found in neuronal membranes. D-Tubocurarine chloride has been shown to have low potency, with whole-cell recordings showing that it does not cause neuronal death but rather generates a low level of paralysis. D-Tubocurarine chloride inhibits the release of neurotrophic factors and can be used as a pharmacological treatment for bowel disease. This drug has also been shown to block the binding of benzalkonium chloride and bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to x-ray crystal structures, which may be due to its similarity to these compounds.
