A method for the synthesis of 2H-thiopyran-3,5(4H,6H)-dione is described. The reaction is initiated with a base and an acrylate in the presence of a fluorine-containing reagent and a catalytic amount of chlorine. The reaction is efficient, has been successfully expressed in recombinant cells, and synthetic methods were developed to provide the desired product in high yield. The reaction time was found to be operational under normal laboratory conditions. Pyrazole derivatives were synthesized as starting materials for this transformation by various synthetic methods.
