4-Thiobutyrolactone is a primary amino acid with the chemical formula CH3CH2CO2H. It is an organic solvent that is used in manufacturing and as a solvent. 4-Thiobutyrolactone has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against collagenase, which may be due to its ability to form a covalent bond with the active methylene group of the enzyme. This compound also has structural similarities to lysine residues found in collagen, which may account for its inhibitory activity. The disulfide bond between the sulfur atoms in 4-thiobutyrolactone and the ethyl group of an adjacent molecule may also play a role in the protein’s inhibitory activity.
