Tropylium tetrafluoroborate is a cationic polymerization catalyst that has been used in the synthesis of covalent adducts, such as erythromycin. It is also used to synthesize diazonium salts, which are intermediates for the preparation of other organic compounds. Tropylium tetrafluoroborate has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against gram-positive bacteria and fungi. This compound is stable in acidic or alkaline conditions, making it ideal for use in hydrochloric acid. The x-ray crystal structures of tropylium tetrafluoroborate have been studied using x-ray diffraction techniques and molecular modelling methods. These studies have elucidated the molecule's structure and provided insight into its chemical reactivity.
